Pay:$80,000.00-$100,000.00/year

Position Summary:

The Tactical Apparel Designer is responsible for designing and developing innovative, functional, and durable tactical clothing and gear for military, law enforcement, concealed carry, outdoor, and performance applications. This role collaborates with cross-functional teams to translate field needs into high-performance products that meet quality, cost, and timeline expectations. And the ideal candidate has a deep understanding of performance textiles, user ergonomics, and the functional requirements of tactical environments.

Responsibilities:

In this role you will be required to...

  • Design and develop tactical apparel and gear from concept to final product, ensuring performance, functionality, durability, and style.
  • Create detailed technical drawings, CADs, BOMs, and tech packs for manufacturing.
  • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, adhering to development calendars and ensuring all milestones and deadlines are met in alignment with timelines set by the Product Line Manager.
  • Ensure all designs/samples meet quality, cost, and timeline expectations.
  • Research, select, test, and recommend appropriate fabrics, trims, closures, and coatings.
  • Research and explore new technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes, presenting any recommendations and findings to Product Line Manager and Leadership.
  • Collaborate with the Product Development to support day-to-day development tasks including sampling, vendor communications, product changes, lab dips, and tech pack updates.
  • Collaborate with product developers, pattern makers, and end-users to translate field needs into innovative solutions.
  • Conduct fittings and sample evaluations, including pattern review and fit.
  • Communicate changes and updates to manufacturing partners based on the defined needs of product(s).
  • Maintain grading consistency across styles and product categories.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry regulations, standards, and competitive products.
  • Attend trade shows, expos, and end-user focus groups, as well as visiting other manufacturers and mills to stay informed and inspired.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong creative and technical design skills with a focus on functionality and performance.
  • Experience designing technical/performance apparel (tactical, outdoor, sportswear, or military preferred).
  • Proficiency with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and technical design software (e.g., CLO 3D, Gerber, Browzwear).
  • Knowledge of performance fabrics, garment engineering, and construction techniques.
  • Understanding of end-user needs in tactical and outdoor environments.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational abilities, managing multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Determined and resilient in overcoming design and development challenges.
  • Experience with global manufacturing processes and production cycles, is a plus.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design, Industrial Design, or related field required.
  • 5-10+ years of experience in garment design, technical design, or apparel product development, preferred.
  • Familiarity with military (MIL-SPEC) standards, Berry-compliant sourcing, and government contract requirements.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing functional design work with technical detailing.
Physical Requirements:
  • Positional: Driving in accordance with job duties assigned. Occasional standing and walking. Constant sitting.
  • Gross Mobility: Occasional lifting of samples and materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Sensory: Visual acuity for design work and sample evaluation; verbal communication with team members and vendors.
