Accounting Manager (Finance)



Join a leading company in the Maritime Industry in a critical role on our Finance & Accounting team! Moran Towing Corporation ( www.morantug.com ) has an exciting opportunity available as an Accounting Manager in our New Canaan, CT office . This full-time, exempt position reports to the Controller.

Position Summary

The Accounting Manager is responsible for all areas relating to financial reporting. This position is responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The Accounting Manager supervises Senior and Staff level Accountants to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. The Accounting Manager will ensure the monthly closing process is completed in a timely and efficient manner. This position addresses a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting and year-end audit preparation.

Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close.
  • Ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information.
  • Prepare monthly management reports and accompanying schedules and worksheets. Assist in providing follow-up support and documentation of significant variances.
  • Coordinate annual financial statement audits with external auditors, including responding to requests and assigning tasks to direct reports.
  • Assist in maintaining an accounting manual and ensure that all policy, procedure and process documentation are current and accurate.
  • Monitor and analyze department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Collaborate with other department members to support overall department goals and objectives.
  • Respond to inquiries from within the Accounting/Finance department, other departments and port managers regarding financial results, and additional reporting request .
  • Support Controller with special projects and workflow process improvement.
  • Provide hands-on management of the monthly close with a view toward continuous process improvement. Assure accurate analysis, cut-off, and reconciliation of balance sheet and income statement accounts and maintenance of supporting work papers.
  • Review all account analyses prepared by direct reports. Provide feedback on work.
  • Ensure that the accounting department is staffed with qualified financial personnel capable of meeting the objectives and responsibilities. Develop and train new and existing staff as required.
  • Advise staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
  • Work with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitor and advise on the progress to enhance the professional. development of staff
  • Handle personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc. for direct reports.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.
  • Experience - ten to fifteen years; positions should demonstrate increasing responsibilities.
  • Ability to take initiative, problem-solve, think analytically to find solutions.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines required.
  • Detail oriented and organized.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good planning and organizational skills to balance and prioritize work.
  • Strong interpersonal, supervisory and customer service skills required.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, MS Power Point, MS Outlook and other applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or CPA
  • Public accounting experience
  • Familiarity with ERP systems Microsoft Business Central or Microsoft 365 Finance & Operations

Pay Transparency

Moran Towing Corporation offers generous benefits, opportunities for professional growth, and competitive salaries based on geographic location. Our target pay range for the Accounting Manager position is $130,000 -$140,000 per year. This pay range represents Moran's commitment to pay transparency and is a reasonable estimate of possible compensation for this role at the time of posting. The final salary for this role will be determined based on careful consideration of a variety of factors, such as the candidate's exact location, experience, and expertise related to the qualifications.
