What is your impact?

Are you ready to lead high-impact power infrastructure projects and shape the future of energy in Phoenix, Arizona? As the Lead Primary Engineer subject matter expert at Linxon, you'll take charge of designing and overseeing substation layouts for projects ranging from 400kV to 11kV. In this key individual contributor role, you'll report directly to the Head of Engineering & Procurement and collaborate with a skilled team of Electrical, Project, and Civil Engineers. While the role doesn't include direct reports, it offers strong growth potential—with the opportunity to advance into the Primary Application Engineering Team Leader position within three to five years, based on performance. What will you do?

  • Lead and deliver primary and High Voltage (HV) design packages for various substation projects, including those related to Grid projects and wind farms.

  • Develop substation layouts and detailed diagrams in compliance with established UK standards and processes, guiding and leading allocated Computer-Aided Design (CAD) resources locally and across different business units.

  • Develop technical specifications and material schedules for HV primary equipment.

Technical Expertise:

  • Undertake primary design and calculations, grounding and lightning design, steel design inputs, transformers, converters/rectifiers, HV and Medium Voltage (MV) switchgear systems, auxiliary power AC and DC systems, power cables, Request for Quotation (RFQ), Bill of Quantities (BOQ), Site Construction File (SCF), Design Safety Lifecycle Plan (DSLP), earthing system, busbar sizing, and cable engineering.

  • Provide technical support and contribute to the development of tender scheme options and related project scope documents.

  • Produce engineering time estimates and support monthly forecasts.

Design and Collaboration:

  • Lead and participate in design and hazard review meetings.

  • Provide technical support on-site when required.

  • Develop tenders and proposals as assigned by the line manager.

  • Train and mentor junior staff.

Position Interactions:

  • Collaborate with Line Managers for resourcing, domain knowledge, training, and conflict resolution.

  • Engage with other engineering functions, including HV cables, civils, commissioning, secondary systems, engineering support, and lead engineers.

  • Interact with site commissioning, test engineers, and installation teams.

  • Liaise with customers and technical assurance for design review.

  • Work closely with suppliers for technical alignment and review.

  • Engage with wider project teams, including project managers, planning, tendering, and supply chain.

Customer Management:

  • Strengthen customer relationships through the presentation and delivery of successful design solutions.

  • Hold and participate in design and hazard reviews.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Prepare conductor force calculations.

  • Check and approve project documentation in accordance with established standards.

  • Ensure that own work packages and delegated work packages align with project program, scope, and allocated budget.

Who you are?

  • Professional Engineering certification is required.

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering and a minimum ten (8) years of experience in foundation, reinforced concrete, and steel design.  OR

  • Master's degree in civil engineering and a minimum eight (6) years of experience in foundation, reinforced concrete, and steel design. 

  • Experience with outdoor and indoor GIS applications.  Specifically on indoor applications, a good understand­ing of the necessary building infrastructure to support GIS is required (e.g. foundation requirements, wall penetrations, embedded steel supports, overhead cranes, maintenance access, etc.).

  • Experience in HV power cable system applications, including cable vault layouts, cable restraint design, and GIS sealing end/air termination applications.

Experience/Special Skills Required:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Geotechnical site surveys, earthworks, site grading and drainages

  • Knowledge of Structural Analysis and Design Software (STAAD) and/or Structural Analysis Program (SAP2000) is necessary.

  • Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suites.

  • Travel is required; up to 25% both domestic and international.
