Staff Mechanical Design Engineer - Specialty Instrument (Finance)

Job Description
Primary Function of Position

The Staff Mechanical Engineer will develop and support innovative surgical instruments for the Da Vinci Surgical System, from concept to launch and beyond, with shared responsibility and shared reward. The successful candidate will understand user needs and requirements, balance individual product-level requirements with system-level requirements, brainstorm innovate solutions to complex mechanical design issues, and commit to the highest product quality. Projects will include a mix of new product development, product improvements, and sustaining projects to mitigate challenges related to capacity improvements and supply chain. Responsibilities include developing, documenting, and validating new product designs, as well as improving existing designs to meet the needs of our customers.

Essential Job Duties

  • Create new product architectures for next-generation instruments.
  • Design, develop and document components and assemblies for surgical instruments.
  • Conceptualize and evaluate complex assemblies, create theoretical models, conduct empirical confirmation, and perform computer-assisted simulations.
  • Design and develop mechanical parts and assemblies, with careful consideration for mechanical design, kinematics, materials (plastics & metals), and stress analysis.
  • Develop product design specifications and perform DFMEA on designed parts.
  • Identify and research new vendors and processes to manufacture components; Collaborate with supplier engineers and vendors to optimize component DFM.
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings to company and international drafting standards.
  • Perform technical design reviews to solicit feedback on design progress.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and automation teams to develop assembly fixtures and processes.
  • Translate clinical requirements and user needs to functional and technical specifications
  • Participate in clinical lab testing to understand product's performance; implement clinical feedback into product's design and requirements.
  • Develop and perform verification and validation testing.
  • Document, prepare, and review patent submissions.
  • Review regulatory submissions.
Qualifications
Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience:

  • High proficiency using software to design and analyze components and mechanisms; SolidWorks preferred (3D design & surfacing), MATLAB and Minitab (numerical analysis), Finite Element Analysis (such as Ansys/Simulation).
  • Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle, including design, implementation, debugging, verification, qualification, and transfer.
  • Excellent analytical aptitude with an emphasis on theoretical fundamentals.
  • Solid understanding of component selection criteria and design for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Experience with designing machining and high-volume injection molding; Experience collaborating with manufacturers to optimize component DFM and DFA.
  • Exceptional aptitude for experimental design, testing, and data analysis; experience with design of experiments (DoEs) and statistical review is a plus.
  • Prior experience leading focused brainstorming sessions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) across functions, including presenting to a technical audience.
  • Prior experience working in a regulated industry (medical device preferred).
  • This position will require frequent (up to 50%) travel to Connecticut during the initial onboarding period.

Required Education and Training:
  • Minimum BSME with at least 12 years experience, MSME with 10 years experience, or PhD with 8 years experience

Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Familiarity with sterilization processes and designing for biocompatibility.
  • Experience in process development and assembly instructions.
  • Programming in Matlab to interface with electromechanical assemblies and perform data analysis.

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target salary ranges are listed.

Base Salary Range Region 1: $180,400 USD - $259,600 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $153,300 USD - $220,700 USD
Shift: Day
